The telegraph is a method of sending information in the form of electric impulses. The word "telegraph" comes from the Greek word meaning "writing" and "distance".

In the 1800's, early telegraph systems were important to the growth of industry, the building of empires bu European nations, and the settlement of the American West. Today the telephone and other methods of electronic communication have replaced the telegraph for many uses. But the telegraph is still important in some places.
