Some Newfie Slang

Newfoundlanders are referred to as "Newfie's." They have their own type of dialect. It changes everyday from proper English into words which are spoken fast, with some letters dropped or in some cases letters added. They also combine many short words to form one long phrase. Sometimes Newfie's also take sayings, and change them around, so that they are in, "Newfie language."   Newfoundlanders have habits, which are similar to other Canadians, but since they're newfie's it's changed a small bit, such as the habit of "b'y" after everything they say. Newfoundlanders also have the shortest known conversation, it's only to simple words, but to Newfoundlanders, it means a mouth full. These sayings, and words, and also the shortest conversation can be viewed under the, "Newfie Slang Page."

Some of Newfoundland's Best Food

Another thing that many Newfoundlanders enjoy is to sit down with family and friends and have a home cooked Newfoundland meal.  A number of meals that Newfoundlanders enjoy come from the sea, this is because fishing is a main source of employment. Some foods which are eaten on the island are: Newfoundland fish and brews, which tends to be very popular and enjoyed by many. Cod tongues, fish cakes,  and cod au gratin. Others include: Bakeapple jam, NFLD. tuna casserole,  and meatloaf. Another very popular meal is Newfoundland jiggs dinner, which includes such foods as peas pudding, cabbage, salt beef, and a number of other delicious dishes. For a list of how to made these appetizing meals you can go to our recipe page, which contains all the steps required to cook these meals.
